HP Envy printer setup

Asked by Geoff Johnson

Since before Christmas, I have been trying to get a HP printer to work with Linux Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS. 64-bit.
Gnome version is 3.36.8 Windowing system X11.
The HP Envy 6020 did have a defective scanner, and probable duff ink cartridges, but would print pictures OK, but not text.
So I now have a HP Envy 6032e, which the seller inisisted would work with Linux, and when I connected it, I was able to scan, so my Dell 7020 communicates via USB cable!
Currently, it is sometimes recognized as a scanner, and sometimes not, and if so, says "unable to scan".
The Dell 7020 computer recognizes it as ENVY 6000 series TH27MGF0K7, so sees the printer.
I have tried adding printer, but when I try a test page, it reports queue held. When I release the queue, the printer lights flash, and when I press the i button, I get a Printer Information Report printed perfectly.
So printer is recognized, and works, and scanner works. (or used to)
But doesn't print anything I want to print.
I downloaded HPLIP, which reports errors in the process, which runs for about half an hour.
I downloaded HPPSdr.exe which reports "error while loading the archive"
I downloaded from Sourceforge, as advised.
I have tried "Cups" which seems to make no difference.
I go via "activities" to printers, and get three entries, with slightly different names, and two different pictures, so it's there, but just won't do anything.
Sorry to make this such a long enquiry, the suppliers of the computer say "all HP printers work with Linux!" and it's just a matter of getting the setup right.
Please advise. All I want is the printer on the end of the USB to print stuff. I have been trying this for four months, dropped some printers on the tip, and returned some, leaving me with my original HP psc 1317 and two Envy's.
I keep telling myself it must be something simple.
Many thanks.
Geoff. Johnson.

This enquiry expired because there has been no response/answer/suggestion for 15 days. I am told that "all HP printers work with Linux" yet I have tried four other printers since my HP psc1317 became faulty, with no success. A canon printer was returned, others scrapped. I now have two HP envy printers, the latest HP envy 6032e is recognized by my computer, and its scanner works, but will print absolutely nothing, despite the communication via the USB cable. I have run HPLIP twice (takes about half an hour) and have checked for drivers (selects HP envy 5660 as recommended) but still no printing. The print queue appears "held". The problem must be something in the setup and may be a simple tweak. Any suggestions welcome. Many thanks. GJ
