Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to
successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

I have this device. It works perfectly without HPLIP on Debian using USB.
See the IPP-over-USB sections at

  https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting

Ok - I can print using the IPP-over-USB. But still can't scan (sane doesn't find the device)

Sorry - I did get sane to find the scanner. Haven't figured-out how to get "Document Scanner" to work with it yet, but probably can. I would still like to use hplip if I can. So - hplip guys; You listening?

Brian, thanks for your help.

The initial info has:

  > device `airscan:e0:downstairs (USB)' is a eSCL downstairs (USB) ip=127.0.0.1

I do not know where "downstairs" comes from [1], but scanning should take place with

  simple-scan "airscan:e0:downstairs (USB)"

The command

  scanimage -L

discovers scanning devices. As the previous link explains, hpaio will not work with
ipp-usb on the system.

> I would still like to use hplip if I can.

I am disinclined to be involved in this endeavour if any debugging of HPLIP is
involved.

[1] Have you accessed the printer's web interface and made an alteration?
I'd expect the URI to have the printer name.

Thanks Brian. Both printing and scanning are working as advertised.
